Building a Money Plan

The focus of the librarian activities and classroom lessons are to teach students what a budget is and how it can be used as a valuable tool in guiding our decision about money. In Three Cups, by Mark St. Germain, students learn of a simple budgeting strategy focused on spending, saving and giving decisions. Mark Pett's wordless book, The Girl and the Bicycle challenges students to think through the process of determining how to earn, save a purchase much-desired bicycle. In Librarian on the Roof! student see the positive results of planning and committing to a course of action. M.G. King has written a lively true story. about a librarian in Texas who creatively staged a fund-raising event to raise money for a children's section in her library.

The librarian activities in this section differ from the classroom lessons in two key ways: (1) the activity is written to be used with a wide-age group; and (2) is shorter in length to accomodate its usage within a 45 minute student library class.

Classroom Lesson Plans

Lesson plans are provided in the following grade level groupings: Kindergarten; 1st-2nd grades; 3rd-4th grades; and 5th-6th grades. There is one lesson plan for each grade level, based on the book that is most targeted toward each individual age group. The aim of all lessons and activities are directed toward teaching about money and basic financial concepts. Be sure and check out the lesson plans and activities
