Vermont Municipal Employees Retirement System (VMERS)

Vermont Municipal Employees Retirement System (VMERS) is the public pension plan provided by the State of Vermont for participating municipalities' employees. It was created in 1975 and is governed by Vermont Statute Title 24, Chapter 125.

The membership as of June 30, 2007 is:

  • 6,166 active
  • 2,064 inactive
  • 432 terminated vested
  • 1,309 retired

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the administration of the system, which includes the management of the assets of the retirement fund as well as the administration of the benefits and record keeping for the membership. The market value of the fund was $328.5 million as of June 30, 2007, compared with $279.8 million as of June 30, 2006. The system paid $7.8 million in retirement benefits during FY 2007.
