2015-2016 Reading is an Investment

Money Business!

The 2015-2016 theme allows librarians, teachers and parents to give students a broad look at money, small businesses, and how our financial system works. In Lots and Lots of Coins by Margarette Reid, students learn about the history of money, particularly coins. A fun coin rubbing exercise is an activity all students should enjoy. For would-be entrepreneurs, Lisa Holthouse's book, It All Started with a Turtle, introduces the basics of starting a small business. Students learn how money is earned. Our final program book, Twenty-two Cents by Paula Yoo, tells the real-life story of Muhammad Yunus and the creation of the Grameen Bank. This illustrated biography explains how banks make a profit and shows how an accessible banking system can make a big difference in the lives of individual families.

Librarian Book Exercises

The librarian activities in this section differ from the classroom lessons in two key ways: (1) the activity is written to be used with a wide-age group; and (2) is shorter in length to accomodate its usage within a 45 minute student library class.

Lots and Lots of Coins - What is money?

It All Started with a Turtle - How is money earned?

Twenty-two Cents - How do banks manage our money?

Additional Lesson Planning Resources

The lessons above are meant for use by the school librarian during a 40-minute instructional time. Teachers who wish to expand on the librarian activities may use this resource list to create longer, more detailed lesson plans.
