Vermont returns unclaimed assets totaling $6.7 million

July 11, 2018

WCAX - The Vermont state treasurer's office says the state has returned more than 17,600 unclaimed assets worth $6.7 million to their rightful owners.

The office says that's a 24 percent increase in the dollar amount returned over the previous fiscal year.

The unclaimed property includes uncashed checks, lost valuables, forgotten security deposits, misplaced insurance policies and investments.

The treasurer's office receives unclaimed property for safekeeping while staff tries to find its owner. Last year, the office received $13.1 million in new property.

State Treasurer Beth Pearce on Monday encouraged residents to search the online database MissingMoney.Vermont.gov or to call treasurer's office at 1-800-642-3191 to check to see if they have unclaimed property.
