Treasurer Pieciak to Host Panel Discussion on Capital Raising Strategies for Vermont Startups

September 27, 2023

Burlington, VT - State Treasurer Mike Pieciak will host “From Idea to Investment: Capital Strategies for Vermont Entrepreneurs,” a panel discussion featuring the SEC Office of the Advocate for Small Business Capital Formation to explore pathways for Vermont's small businesses and startups to access capital. The event will take place at Hula in Burlington on Wednesday, October 11 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm followed by a networking hour. Individuals interested in attending can register for the event here.

The Office of the Advocate for Small Business Capital Formation advocates for solutions to address challenges faced by small businesses and their investors raising and deploying capital, from early-stage startups to small public companies.

Vermont's capital markets have grown significantly since the pandemic. Since 2021, Vermont has had the largest percentage increase of venture capital investment in the country. In 2022, the Burlington metro area attracted approximately $554.7 million in venture capital investment ranking 30 out of 413 U.S. metro areas. Vermont has also seen strong growth in new business formations, ranking second behind Georgia in largest percentage increase in new private establishments in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the prior year.

"Vermont's recent surge in venture capital investment and new business formations show that our state is not only a great place to do business, but a great place to invest in the future,” said Treasurer Pieciak. "I'm excited our office is able to bring together national and local experts to help guide aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners on how to access capital to start and grow their businesses.”

Treasurer Pieciak will moderate the panel discussion that will feature:

  • Julie Davis, Senior Special Counsel, U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission
  • Ryan McDevitt, CEO, Benchmark Space Systems
  • Gwen Pokalo Hart, Vice President of Policy, The Center for Women & Enterprise
  • Eli Moulton, managing partner, Moulton Law Group

The event is open to the public and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists.
